On Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m., we will welcome Harriet Washington, an award-winning medical writer, author, and ethicist. She teaches bioethics at Columbia University and has held fellowships at Harvard Medical School, the University of Nevada, and other universities. Her 2007 book Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. It is a comprehensive account of the many experiments conducted on Black Americans without their knowledge or consent. Her work was the basis for the American Medical Association’s 2008 formal apology to Black physicians for its history of racist practices and policies.
