Renovated disc golf course reopens on PCC’s Fremont campus

CAÑON CITY – Discs are flying again at the Pueblo Community College Fremont campus.

The Heritage Trail Disc Golf Course encompasses about 40 acres on the property at 51320 Highway 50 West. The course had been dormant since 2018, when a flash flood caused extensive damage. Repairs and improvements were further delayed by the COVID pandemic, but significant work on the renovations began in 2024 under the direction of Campus Administrator Mike Maffucci.

Today the course features 18 holes with views of Skyline Drive and the Wet Mountains. There is no charge to play, and it is open to the public. Those under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult and players need to bring their own discs.

“The students have paid for the course through fees, but students and staff here see the value in this being open to the community,” Maffucci said. “Recreation is huge in Fremont County, so providing a good disc golf course is a way to draw the community to campus and get them comfortable being here. That’s especially important to me.”

The course is accessible from a newly created gravel lot on the northeast side of the college. From there, visitors can also access geology and history trails to learn more about the surrounding area.

“PCC is technically at the end of the riverwalk, so you can walk or bike (to campus) from town,” Maffucci said. “It’s family friendly and people can check out the trails and learn while having fun and getting exercise.” The course is becoming well known regionally and has a rating of 4.4 out of 5 on the disc golfing app UDisc. It takes about two hours to play 18 holes.

Maffucci plans to hold several tournaments this year to raise awareness of the course and college. Outside tournaments and other events will require PCC approval.
