Elementary Teacher Education

What will I learn?

This program will introduce you to the field of education. Your courses will include General Education requirements common to all Colorado two- and four-year institutions. They also meet appropriate Colorado Model Content standards for elementary education. When you earn the Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Elementary* Education, you will be ready to apply for admission as a junior to a four-year institution’s teacher education program.  

If you are interested in majoring in education, you will need to identify the four-year college/university to which you plan to transfer. Each individual institution requires different curriculum electives for graduation.

Before taking classes, students must meet with PCC’s teacher education faculty advisor to plan a course of study and examine the list of approved credits for each four-year institution in Colorado.

Emphasis in elementary education (grades K-6)
Students who wish to teach grades K through 6 may pursue an Associate of Arts degree with Elementary* Education emphasis.

Emphasis in secondary education (grades 7-12)
If you wish to teach grades 7 through 12, you should identify the four-year college or university to which you intend to transfer and the appropriate curriculum for that school. You may pursue an Associate of Arts degree with secondary education emphasis in one of the following licensure areas: English, Math, Science, Social Science (History/Political Science) or Spanish.

Emphasis in K-12 education
If you wish to teach in the K-12 content areas of art, music or physical education, you should pursue an Associate of Arts degree at PCC. Your advisor will help you select the electives that will be required for your bachelor’s degree.

*There are no current statewide articulation agreements in secondary or K-12 education, but students can still effectively pursue these options at PCC.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

The licensure requirements for the Elementary Teacher Education program may differ between all 50 states and U.S. territories.  

Pueblo Community College (PCC) recommends each student visit Education Commission of the States page to identify the program requirements for each state in which you plan to live and practice.  

PCC can only guarantee that the requirements for the state of Colorado are met with our program.

PCC has not determined if the Elementary Teacher Education program meets applicable state requirements for the following states and territories: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
