PUEBLO – Pueblo’s two longest-running football traditions can be enjoyed by fans near and far this season thanks to a collaboration among Pueblo School District 60, Pueblo Community College and KDZA radio. The Cannon Game between East and South high schools (Sept. 13) and the Bell Game between Central and Centennial (Sept. 27) will be broadcast live on television, online and on the radio. PCC’s Center for New Media will produce the TV and online broadcasts. KDZA’s Nick Donovan, Guy Girtin and Dave West will provide the play-by-play and color analysis, which will be simulcast on the radio.
“We are glad to partner with PCC and KDZA this year to bring the games to those who can't attend in person via livestream and radio broadcast,” said Aaron Bravo, District 60 director of athletics. “We expect the stands to be full of faithful supporters for all schools involved. Recent renovations to Dutch Clark Stadium will make these nights even better.”
Each game typically draws more than 10,000 fans each year. Central and Centennial have played against each other since 1892 and started fighting for the coveted bell in 1950. East and South have battled since 1959; the cannon became the focal point of the rivalry in 1976.
"During my first visit to Pueblo, someone told me about the Cannon and Bell games and how important they are to the community,” said PCC President Chato Hazelbaker. “As a new resident, I can't wait to see them for the first time."
In addition to providing a way for fans and alumni in other parts of the world to remain connected to a Pueblo tradition, the TV broadcast allows PCC students to get hands-on experience producing a live event.
Pregame for both contests will begin at 6 p.m. MST followed by kickoff at 7 p.m. The TV broadcast will be available on the PCC and District 60 Facebook pages, Xfinity Channel
19 and KRDO digital channel 13.3. KDZA will air the simulcast on 101.9 FM and 1230 AM.
